Q & A with the Author
A Clarinet's Wish:
A Story about Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Your Dreams
In this section, we sit down with author Madalina Hubert to get an insight into what inspired her to write A Clarinet's Wish.
Madalina Hubert is a Toronto-based writer and editor who has written dozens of feature stories for magazines, newspapers, and websites. She has also written several scripts for children's mini-series.
Madalina is passionate about art and culture and loves creating stories that inspire young readers. She is the author of several lovely picture books: A Hat for Grandma, Lydia the Warrior Princess, Saryana and the Wonderful Djembe Drum, and A Clarinet's Wish.
What inspired you to write A Clarinet's Wish?
There were several sources of inspiration. One of these is related to the power of music to bring beauty and wonder to audiences. I've experienced this feeling myself as I sat mesmerized in a concert hall listening to a inspiring performance, or even as I listened (or played) a piece of beautiful music at home. In those moments, I felt as if the music was communicating with me in ways that I couldn't consciously understand, but that were both uplifting and heartfelt. Such experiences helped me to better understand the words of nineteenth century German composer Robert Schumann, “To send light into the depths of the human heart—this is the artist's calling!”
There is also another aspect to the story, which is that while sometimes we have beautiful dreams and wishes, working to accomplish them is often more challenging than we have initially anticipated. It takes hard work, determination, and patience, especially when we run into obstacles, such as other people refusing to cooperate.
Sometimes when we face these challenges, we get discouraged and want to give up on our dreams, without realizing that perhaps there is something we can do to change the situation. This is another important aspect that A Clarinet's Wish teaches us.

What did you enjoy most about the writing process?
My favorite aspect was exploring the themes of this story, which led me to delve deeper into the importance of beautiful music and kindness in my own life.
What was the most rewarding aspect of writing A Clarinet's Wish?

The most rewarding aspect was working on a story that can bring joy and inspiration to children and their families. My hope is that everyone who reads A Clarinet's Wish—no matter their age—gains some inspiration from it and learns to better appreciate the value of music, kindness, and hard work in their own lives.
What was it like to see the story come to life through the illustrations?
It was a wonderful experience. The illustrator, Bella Maher, brought her own experiences and individuality to the story, and it was great to work together to bring the story to life.
